Why does my 2 identical computers have different ram types?
I have 2 dell inspiron 1501 laptops. both have vista basic, but one has the AMD athlon 64 x2 processor and the other has AMD Turion 64. I have 2gb of ram installed in the dell with the Athlon and only 1gb is in the dell with the Turion. I recently had to tear both down and use one for parts because the internal ac adapter quit charger the battery. So when i was putting everything back together i noticed they had different types of ram. One has pc2-4200 and the other has pc2-6400 i believe. Why is this? I tried using the 2 gb which is the pc2-6400 on the working motherboard but it will not boot up and the screen doesnt show anything. I went to the dell website and they only offer pc2-6400 and pc2-5300 for the 1501. Can anyone tell me what is up with that?
The have different processors, which means different chipsets, and different frontside bus speeds. They are not identical. In fact, they're very different.

That will tell you precisely what you need. Then do a Google search or look on eBay. There's no law that says you have to buy the RAM from Dell.
