External flash recommendations for Sony A200 DSLR?
To call myself a novice photographer would be giving myself too much credit. However, I do want to get an external flash - especially for taking pictures of people. My budget is up to a couple hundred dollars, but I don't know enough to know if there is a significant difference between the $130 flash and the $500 flash.
Battery life is probably my most important consideration, but I would also like to be able to use filters and defusers.
There is a huge difference between the HVL-F20 and the HVL-F58. You could try to find an HVL-F36AM for under $200. They should be well within that price range but may not be easy to find. Try ebay and maybe amazon.
A suggestion that I received and that I went with is the Metz 36Af-4 which costs about $100. It is more powerful than the Sony HVL-F20 and less expensive. I had planned on upgrading to the Sony HVL-F58 later but I have changed my mind. the Metz does all that I need. If I needed more, I would prefer to go to a more sophisticated lighting set-up rather than a more powerful flash. I just can't see paying $500 for a flash when that could go towards lighting instead. I have a soft-box style diffuser that I can attach to the flash head ($5 from ebay) and it makes the flash very soft and I get great results. The only complaint I have about the Metz is that I wish it swiveled. But it does tilt and has a manual zoom feature.

As far as batteries go, I use the rechargeable AA batteries for my flash.
