My laptop is not charging. Help!?
I have a Compaq Presario CQ50-210US and my laptop is not charging.
My battery is currently at 0% for the last week and it tells me that my battery is ("Plugged in,not charging)"
My laptop is currently running on my adapter at the moment and it is kind of like a desktop now. My battery is not charged.
Is this dangerous?
How can I fix this?
Do I need a new battery or a new adapter?
How much would it cost if I were to buy a new battery for my laptop?
What stores can I buy it from "AND" where can I buy it online from a reliable source? How much would it cost online? I want the cheapest. Used or New.

Well if the problem is simply a fubar battery, replacing it will solve the problem. It could be that one of the internal connections in the battery broke somehow, and it is no longer able to receive power. Remove your laptop's battery and check the metal contacts on both the battery and on the laptop. Look for signs of corrosion or damage. You might be able to gently clean these with a damp cloth to remove any debris, then after it dries reinstall the battery and see if that helps. If any of the contacts are broken, that will need to be professionally repaired.
If you do buy a new battery, NEVER buy used. (Unless it's a killer deal, like $10 or something.) Always buy brand new. Lithium-ion batteries begin oxidizing the moment they are opened, which causes their maximum capacity to steadily dwindle even if it just sits there unused. After 4 years, your battery may only have 10% of its original capacity remaining. (In other words, a battery that used to power your system for 4 hours now struggles to keep it going for 20 minutes.)
If you want to buy from a store, you can try calling around to check prices. Best Buy, Circuit City, OfficeDepot, etc. Also check the yellow pages for small computer repair businesses, because they might be able to undersell Big Business, due to lower overhead costs. Online, you can try TigerDirect.com or eBay, or even visit Compaq's website and look into ordering a replacement battery. Always shop around! You can expect to spend between $100 and $150 for a new battery, depending on how many cells it has. (More cells = longer run time off one charge.)
This might be a situation where you would do well to bring it in to a computer repair shop. They will probably have a compatible battery in stock, and can try plugging that battery in and seeing if it will take a charge. If it does, then you know the battery was the problem, and it can be replaced. If the replacement battery doesn't take a charge, then the problem is internal and it will require a more complicated repair. Splurging on a new battery is a bit of a gamble--if that new battery won't take a charge either, then you're stuck with a useless battery and will need to go through the hassle of a product return.
