What will happen if the voltage input to a Dell 1000 Inspiron laptop is reduced?
The laptop runs on its own battery which is 9.6v. Why does it need a 19v PSU.
What would happen if a variable PSU was connected and the voltage slowly reduced, would it break something.
When the battery is charging, to acheive full capacity I assume the voltage will increase to quite a lot higher than 9.6v nominal, so there must be regulators to compensate or is the battery effectively detached internally from the motherboard when the mains PSU is detected?
Do you know what the peak voltage is for the battery under charge.
I am now thinking of rebuilding my battery pack, as it won't hold a charge and I keep getting the power up error screen, including a socket to put in 12v regulated down to 9.6v if the board can't handle 12v.
The 19.5 V (that's the output of my Dell's laptop ps) is likely being divided and distributed between the battery circuit, and the rest of the laptop.
If you reduce the input voltage to the laptop to only 9.6 V, and then that is distributed, you will effectively provide an under voltage to the main board, and likely fry the motherboard, or something vital.
Best not to do it, unless you really don't want the laptop...or you are filthy rich and just love to "see what happens".
